Topic:    Office of the State Auditor

The Office of the State Auditor oversees local government financial activity in Minnesota by performing audits of local government financial statements and by reviewing documents, data, reports, and complaints reported to the Office. The financial information collected from local governments is analyzed and serves as the basis of statutory reports issued by the Office of the State Auditor.   In addition, the Office of the State Auditor is an excellent resource for many of us as we use many of their reports, statements of position, and take advantage of the training opportunities to help with our roles.

Speaker Bio:  State Auditor Rebecca Otto

Rebecca Otto was elected Minnesota's 18th State Auditor in 2006 after receiving the endorsement of three previous State Auditors from both major political parties. She is the first woman Democrat to be elected to the post and was re-elected to a second four-year term in 2010 and a third term in 2014.

In 2009 the National State Auditors Association (NSAA) awarded State Auditor Otto its prestigious Excellence in Accountability Award for the Best Practices Review: Reducing Energy Costs in Local Government.  In June of 2011 the League of Minnesota Cities awarded her the LMC President's Award, citing her "unwavering support of Minnesota local government in enhancing effectiveness, efficiency and accountability for all Minnesotans."

State Auditor Otto holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in Biology from Macalester College. She taught public school seventh-grade science for five years.  She has served on several boards and committees and has been an active volunteer for a number of organizations, including Warner Nature Center and Big Brother/Big Sister.  She lives with her husband, screenwriter Shawn Lawrence Otto, in a wind-powered, passive solar home they designed and built with their own hands.
